Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League table but missed an opportunity to move three points clear as an injury-depleted Manchester United earned a goalless draw at Old Trafford.
United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to use all three of his substitutions before half-time.
The best chance fell to United in the first half when keeper Alisson nicked the ball from Jesse Lingard.
Joel Matip scored an own goal but an offside in the build-up ruled it out.
It was a strange first half as injuries disrupted any rhythm – it was the first time there has been four substitutions before the break in a Premier League game since February 2009.
Liverpool controlled 62% of the possession but could only muster one shot on target.
United were the better side after the break – Marcus Rashford dragging a shot wide while Paul Pogba’s headed chance was ruled offside.
But the only time the ball hit the back of the net was when Matip steered it past team-mate Alisson only for it be ruled out for offside in the build-up in a game where there were only four shots on target.
The draw moves Liverpool back to the top of the table – a point above Manchester City – while United drop below Arsenal in fifth place.
