[...] Jun 24th, 2007 by suicyte Please excuse the rude title of this post - it is crafted after a number of recent blog postings on the shortcomings of Wikipedia. I for myself have been a very late adaptor of wikipedia and had never expected much from this resource - whenever I am using it now, I am pleasantly surprised how useful it is, even for most scientific topics. Obviously, you cannot believe everything you find in Wikipedia, and I am quite concerned about the growing number of young students, who apparently learn biochemistry from Wikipedia rather than from textbooks - this is certainly not the way to go. However, for a quick look-up of the formula of orlistat (tetrahydrolipstatin, “alli“) and stuff like that, Wikipedia is much more convenient than any other resource I know of. And, as has been said before, nothing beats Wikipedia if you want to know the difference between a ‘mad scientist’ and an ‘evil genius’. [...]

Ooo. Bio stuff always fascinated me, possibly because bioengineering was one of the subjects I never found time to study as an undergrad. Some of my best friends at my department are doing some sort of bone stem cell work, and it\'s terribly interesting.

I\'ve always wanted to learn how to do DNA characterization. That gel electrophoresis, or whatever that technique is, always looked pretty cool. :o)

Alas no! Rather that producing new varieties of citrus fruits I am instead studying the Ohp operon of the soil bacterium Rhodococcus. For those who are still curious, Ohp is another name for ortho-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid, and is absolutely nothing to do with over head projectors.

The operon is responsible for producing proteins which help break down Ohp, allowing the bacterium to use it as a carbon source. I am looking at how the production of these proteins is regulated, so as they are only produced when needed. The protein responsible for this regulation has already been found, I am trying to discover where it bind to the DNA.

And I believe that was more information than you probably wanted to know. Especially as my suspicions place you as someone who I probably know.

Hello,

Aha, a project indeed? Rather grand and exciting. What is it to be? A new type of grapefruit?

Thank You.

I was aware of the Hitch-hikers film yet, although I knew the approximate date I hadn't yet heard that a release date had been announced.
